Critical Differences Between Calcium Silicate Board and Fibre Cement Sheet

Date 2024.08.12

While calcium silicate board and fibre cement sheet fall under the broader category of cement-based building materials, they exhibit distinct differences in composition and properties. Tseason, a leading provider of high-quality construction materials, can help clarify these distinctions to ensure you choose the right product for your needs.

Calcium silicate boards and fibre cement sheets are now commonly used building materials. Although they have many similarities, the two are not used as two products.

Let's look at calcium silicate and fibre cement sheet, respectively.

Calcium silicate board is a siliceous material, calcium material, added plant fibers, and a variety of organic and inorganic substances, in accordance with a certain proportion of mixing, the use of program-controlled equipment and flow slurry method of production molding, high-pressure steam curing, and other processes made of green, safe, multi-functional high-level architectural panels.

Fibre cement sheet is made of excellent high-grade cement as the base material and with natural fiber reinforcement through the production process of molding, pressurization, high-temperature steam curing, and other treatments; it is a new type of construction and industrial panels with excellent performance.

The above introduction shows that the calcium silicate board is not a fibre cement sheet. So, what is the difference between a calcium silicate board and a fiber cement board?

  1. From the raw materials, the difference between calcium silicate board and fiber cement board is mainly that it has less cement content. The use of siliceous materials (quartz sand) and calcareous materials (slaked lime) under high temperature and high pressure (autoclave) reaction to form Tobey mullite, and asbestos, pulp, and other fibers plays the role of the skeleton.
  2. Fiber cement board is a physical product, and calcium silicate board is a chemical product.
  3. The fiber cement board has a press, the calcium silicate board does not, and the calcium silicate board has an autoclave.
  4. The density of fiber cement board is higher than calcium silicate board; the density of fiber cement board is 1.5g/cm3 or more, and calcium silicate board density is 1.2g/cm3.
  5. The thickness of the fiber cement board can be 2.5-100mm. Calcium silicate board can not be 4mm below the ultra-thin board and 30mm above the ultra-thick board. General calcium silicate board manufacturers can only produce boards with a thickness of 6-12mm.
  6. The average production of fiber cement board color is cement color, and calcium silicate board color is white.
